Private client questions I answer often
Families ring me from car parks outside Medway or Canterbury custody with the same questions about cost, independence, and what happens next. I don't work for the police. I work for the person in the interview chair. These answers are general; your situation may differ once I see disclosure.
Is the police station really free?
If you're interviewed under caution, legal advice at the station is free under legal aid. That is statutory and not means-tested.
Private fees apply only if you choose private representation or if no legal aid category applies. I explain which before you commit.
Can I choose you specifically?
You can ask for me by name when the custody desk contacts the Defence Solicitor Call Centre. If two jobs clash and I can't get there, Tuckers Solicitors LLP can send another accredited representative, still free under legal aid.
For voluntary interviews you can request me through this website before the appointment date.
What should I bring?
ID if you have it, medication, and details of a responsible adult who can look after children or pets. Don't bring evidence you have not discussed with a solicitor.
If you have documents the police sent, bring those. Don't message witnesses from the car park.
Will you tell the police what I said?
No. Legal professional privilege protects our consultation. I only reveal what you authorise in interview or what is required by law.
If you ask me to hand the police a prepared statement, we agree the wording together before interview starts.
What if I'm charged?
If you're charged after I've advised you at the police station, your case will generally go to Tuckers Solicitors LLP for the magistrates' court or Crown Court. If you instruct me privately, I can represent you at court myself. I also cover weekend, bank holiday and Christmas courts. I pass my attendance note so they know what happened at the station.
Court funding is separate from police station legal aid. We discuss that if charge happens.
