You can usually rearrange a voluntary police interview so a duty solicitor can attend. Don't ignore the invitation, but don't confirm a date before advice is in place. Bring ID and any paperwork; let your solicitor handle contact with the officer about timing.
1) How to rearrange
When police contact you, take the officer’s name, unit, and reference. Tell them you'll take legal advice and that a solicitor will confirm the appointment. Your solicitor contacts police to propose a new time.
2) What to bring
- Photo ID if requested in the invitation.
- The letter, email, or text inviting you.
- Any documents your solicitor asks you to bring, not unsolicited evidence.
3) What not to bring or say
Don't attend early to “explain” matters without your solicitor. Don't bring witnesses unless agreed. Read PACE Code C paragraph 3.21A on voluntary interviews.
4) Free legal advice
Legal advice at a voluntary police interview isn't means-tested at the police station stage. Arrange representation before you agree the slot.
